Ethiopia’s espresso and lower flower industries are grappling with important challenges as a result of new EU rules. From January 2025, producers should adjust to the bloc’s Due Diligence Act, which mandates strict environmental requirements for exporting to Europe. Hundreds of thousands of small-scale espresso farmers might want to reveal that their land is free from deforestation, whereas flower farmers should handle a pest that threatens European markets or threat exclusion from the commerce. This poses a significant concern for Ethiopia, which exports 30 p.c of its espresso and eight p.c of its flowers to Europe. Adhering to those new EU requirements shall be a frightening process, as FRANCE 24’s Clothilde Hazard and Olivia Bizot report.
