Democrats maintain edge in CA-7 early ballot returns

Democrats and seniors lead early ballot returns in California’s 7th Congressional District primary.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Democrats and older voters continued to account for the largest share of early ballot returns in California’s 7th Congressional District primary, according to an updated Political Data, Inc. ballot tracker. 

The updated tracker covered ballot returns from May 4 through May 22, 2026. Political Data, Inc. reported 46,537 ballots had been returned out of 474,862 ballots tracked in the district, or about 10% turnout. 

Democrats accounted for 43% of returned ballots, with 19,921 ballots returned during the reporting period. Republicans made up 37% of returned ballots, with 17,017 returns, while voters with no party preference or other affiliations accounted for 21% with 9,599 ballots returned. 

Older voters continued to make up the largest share of early participation in the district.

Voters 65 and older accounted for 56% of returned ballots, with 25,966 returns. Voters ages 50 to 64 made up 22% of returned ballots with 10,025 returns, while voters ages 35 to 49 accounted for 14% with 6,359 ballots returned. Voters ages 18 to 34 represented 9% of returned ballots with 4,187 returns. 

District 7 was redrawn under California’s Prop 50. It includes parts of Sacramento, San Joaquin, and El Dorado counties. According to Ballotpedia, candidates include:

  • Doris Matsui (D)
  • Robert Morin (D)
  • Enayat Nazhat (D)
  • Ralph Nwobi (R)
  • Mai Vang (D)
  • Zachariah Wooden (R)
