DocFilm – The Sushi Hype

This documentary is a journalistic investigation into the supply chains of salmon and tuna, the two most popular sushi ingredients. The film takes us on a journey from contested tuna fishing grounds in the Indian Ocean to huge salmon farms in Northern Europe, as well as to the gigantic factories of the fishing industry. Near Gdansk, for example, some 115,000 sushi boxes are produced every day. That adds up to around 23 tons of ready-made sushi, some of which is destined for German supermarkets. Yellowfin tuna, which is particularly popular for sushi, is now threatened with extinction. Fisheries expert Philipp Kanstinger from the nature conservation organization WWF therefore advises critical consumption, because: “Truly sustainable yellowfin tuna is virtually non-existent.” Overfishing through aggressive fishing methods, factory farming and modern slave labor are all part of the dark side of the great sushi craze.
