The UN warns that South Sudan has been pushed nearer to battle by the arrest of Vice President Riek Machar. He and the inside minister, his spouse, have been detained at their residence by forces loyal to president Salva Kiir. It is amid rising pressure between the longstanding rivals. The 2 are signatories to a rapidly-unravelling 2018 peace deal meant to finish a five-year civil battle.
