Gospel star Zaza Mokhethi (46) was nominated for a Basadi in Music Award in the Gospel Artist of the Year category.
The singer and songwriter, originally from Kwa-Thema said this is the first time she has been nominated for these awards. She expressed her joy and shock after receiving the news of her nomination.
“It was mind-blowing. I was excited; in fact, I still am,” she said.
This nod comes after she has solidified herself in the music industry over the years, performing on local and international stages.
“This nomination means so much to me, especially since we are approaching Women’s Month. I have a soft spot for women, especially those entering the industry.
“God has laid on my heart the drive to mentor young women and give them a platform using my platform and help introduce them into the world,” she said warmly.
Mokethi has used her music to uplift women, releasing two projects called Women in Chronicle aimed at women telling their stories through music.
Mokhethi grew up in the church with her grandfather as the bishop. She revealed her love for gospel music began there.
After matriculating at Promat College in Springs, she studied at the Funda Centre in Soweto. She then performed overseas in theatre productions such as Africa Mama and Africa Africa London.
“I joined Joyous Celebration 12. I sang the song Namhla Nkosi which launched my career in the gospel scene,” she said.
She was later signed to Spirit of Praise as an artist to the company, she Performed in Spirit of Praise 5 and 6.
She revealed she wanted to start something that would one day carry her legacy. The result of that thought led to the start of her own company.
“In 2015, I started my company called Zahza Holdings Pty Ltd. I recorded my first live DVD and it went platinum,” Mokhethi said.
She recently released her fourth live album, which was well-received by her fans.
“To an aspiring singer, I say sharpen your skill and read Matthew 6:33 which says, ‘But seek ye first the kingdom of God and all these things shall be added unto you,’” she advised.
