Images Cinema reopens today | Entertainment

WILLIAMSTOWN — Images Cinema, in the heart of downtown Williamstown, is an independent movie theater dedicated to fostering community through film and events. A 20-minute drive from Bennington, Images is celebrating its 110th anniversary this year, making it the third oldest cultural organization in the Berkshires and one of the oldest continuously operating movie theaters in New England.

Images’ main theater has been closed for the past seven months while the organization completed the second phase of its two-phase renovation. Phase one created a new bar and lounge area. The second phase developed a new screening room. These improvements enable the organization to simultaneously host three events: one in a 70-seat main theater, another in the 18-seat screening room, and a third in the 15-seat lounge. These improvements have been a dream of the organization for years and finally came about when Dan Hudson, was hired as executive director in October of 2022.

Located between MASS MoCA and The Clark, Images occupies a cultural space that, according to Hudson, is a synthesis of both museums. As a curator, Hudson loves showing classic movies and doing retrospectives, but he’s also interested in showing cutting-edge new films from A24 and other independent distributors.

To celebrate their reopening on May 22, Images is running a two-week film series titled “First Look,” in which they will screen films which portray their something-for-everybody approach. Screenings are free for members and $5 for non-members.
