PORTLAND, Ore. (KATU) — Dark Horse Comics announced Thursday that it will close its two Oregon Things From Another World retail stores on June 30.
Those locations are in Milwaukie and Beaverton.
The comic book publishing company, which has its roots in Oregon, also said it will close its California location on Sept. 30. That store is at Universal Studios.
“This was not an easy decision, and we do not take lightly the impact it has on the people directly affected,” Dark Horse said on its website.
It said it will start a new initiative called Dark Horse Games.
“Dark Horse Games will provide creators with the development opportunities and creative partnerships needed to realize their worlds within interactive entertainment,” it said.
Dark Horse said the changes were part of its efforts “to modernize, strengthen collaboration within the company, and build a more-connected organization across Fellowship Entertainment.”
On its website, it said it was grateful for the hard work and dedication of the employees who will lose their jobs. It said it will support them during the transition.
“We are working to ensure that this process is handled with the care and respect it warrants,” it said.
Mike Richardson launched Dark Horse Comics in 1986, as an offshoot of his Oregon comic book retail chain, eventually becoming the third-largest comics publisher in the United States.
In March, Jay Komas replaced Richardson as CEO.
