JUCO World Series kicks off with banquet in Grand Junction

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) – The JUCO World Series is officially underway in Grand Junction, with players, coaches and fans gathering Friday for the annual banquet.

More than 800 people packed the Grand Junction Convention Center for the JUCO World Series banquet.

“Today’s really kicking off the tournament itself with the Hall of Fame induction for the NJCAA Coaches Association. And recognizing the teams that they’re all out here to compete for the JUCO World Series,” said Darren Coltrinari, tournament director for JUCO World Series.

The event included Hall of Fame recognition for longtime coaches and a keynote address from retired Navy SEAL and Grand Junction native Karl “Gus” Gustavson.

“Gus Gustavson, SEAL Team 6 operator, retired now. Grand Junction native, graduated from Grand Junction High School in 1997. And we’re just so fortunate as a community to have him come back to Grand Junction and share an amazing message to these student athletes,” Coltrinari said.

Organizers said the banquet gives teams a chance to experience the atmosphere and excitement surrounding one of the biggest events of the year in Grand Junction.

The JUCO World Series begins Saturday and runs through next week in Grand Junction.
