Florida has been a hotbed for vacationers for years, and a new report shows the state is among the best for road trips.
The law firm of Steel Adams Hosman concluded a study recently ranking states for traveling by vehicle for a vacation during Summer months. The Sunshine State came in third in the country for road trip experiences among travelers heading into the unofficial beginning of Summer in a few days with Memorial Day Weekend.
The condition of Florida’s roadways contributed to the high ranking, according to the study.
“The state maintains some of the highest quality infrastructure in the country, with 87% of Florida’s roads rated in ‘acceptable’ condition,” the law firm’s study concluded.
The study’s analysts compiled an overall road trip score based on several metrics, including road quality, the number of auto repair shops per every 1,000 kilometers, road fatalities per 100,000 vehicles, and other factors.
Florida racked up a total score of 70.45. That’s just behind Maryland, which scored 74.13 to finish second in the nation. New Jersey topped the list with a score of 83.
Florida was the highest-ranked Southern state, with Tennessee just behind at No. 4 and Virginia at No. 5.
Analysts found Florida roadways are hospitable and a playground for road travelers throughout the state.
“Florida offers significant support for motorists, boasting 79.91 auto repair shops and 42.68 gas stations per 1,000 kilometers, ensuring travelers are never far from essential services,” the study found. “The state provides ample opportunity for outdoor recreation, featuring 1.37 National Park Service campgrounds for every 10,000 kilometers.”
Justin Hosman, a personal injury lawyer and partner at Steele Adams Hosman, said the findings are an important barometer as the busy Summer travel season begins.
“Summer is the peak season for the American road trip, but increased congestion and long hours behind the wheel bring unique safety challenges,” Hosman said. “With more families and travelers hitting the highways, it is critical for drivers to remain vigilant, perform vehicle safety checks, and stay focused on the road to ensure a smooth and safe summer journey.”
The worst state for road travel in the country was New Mexico, which placed No. 50 with a road travel score of 17.02, according to the study. Alaska was No. 49 and Mississippi came in at No. 49.
