R&B star Chris Brown is celebrating his honorary doctorate from a “royal” Dallas-based private Christian institution that lacks national accreditation.
Brown, 37, was awarded an honorary Doctor of Philosophy in Visual & Performing Arts by Harvest Christian University (HCU), which touts a long history of awarding hundreds of honorary degrees to celebrities.
The self-proclaimed “King of R&B” shared the news on Instagram on May 23 with photos of himself in full academic regalia accepting the honor during a graduation-style ceremony. The caption read simply: “I DID A THING!” The diploma recognizes him for his “longstanding impact on music, entertainment, and performance culture.”
The university presented the degree as a celebration of Brown’s nearly two-decade career as one of R&B’s most commercially successful artists. Since breaking out in the mid-2000s, he has amassed chart-topping singles such as “Kiss Kiss” and “Forever.” His latest album, “Brown,” debuted at No. 7 on the Billboard 200 with roughly 65,000 equivalent units in its first week, boosted by more than 60 million on-demand streams.
Shortly after Brown shared the news with fans, some critics pointed out that HCU has awarded hundreds of honorary degrees to celebrities. Past recipients include rapper Busta Rhymes (2025); rapper T.I. and his wife, Tameka “Tiny” Harris (2024); R&B singer Tank (2021); reality television star Sheree Whitfield; comedian Cedric the Entertainer; the late Bernie Mac; and former Dallas Cowboys player Michael Irvin, according to the HCU website.
The university also has a dedicated page on its website explaining its policy on honorary degrees.
As part of an explanation for the policy, the HCU website describes honorary degrees as a “distinguished academic award conferred by universities to recognize outstanding contributions to society, culture, or a specific field — regardless of whether the recipient has completed formal academic study.”
Citing precedent it says dates back to Benjamin Franklin as the “most famous early American recipient of honorary degrees,” the HCU website recounts how Franklin, who had limited formal education, was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of St. Andrews in 1759 and later received an honorary Doctor of Civil Law degree from Oxford University in 1762.
“Franklin took pride in these honors and thereafter referred to himself as ‘Doctor Franklin,’ even though he had no medical training,” the website states. “Unlike a matriculated degree, which signifies the promise of future accomplishments, an honorary degree is awarded as proof of a life already lived with distinction.”
While honorary degrees may be considered traditional academic recognition, questions remain about the legitimacy and value of recognition from an unaccredited school.
HCU describes itself on its website as an “Indigenous First Nations post-secondary institution” operating under a “Royal Charter” with principles of autonomy and self-regulation. The university also claims various international accreditations, including from the Board of Quality Standards (BQS), the Kingdom of Hawai‘i Royal Accreditation Commission (KOHRAC), and membership in the International Network for Quality Assurance Agencies in Higher Education (INQAAHE). It also references a related institution’s candidacy with the Transnational Association of Christian Colleges and Schools (TRACS).
However, despite HCU claiming “royal charter accreditation” on its website, no institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education has accredited HCU itself. As a result, credits and degrees from the school generally lack the transferability or recognition associated with regionally accredited institutions.
Beyond his singing career and academic honors, Brown is also known for pleading guilty to felony assault in 2009 after assaulting then-girlfriend Robyn Rihanna Fenty. Brown was sentenced to five years of probation, community labor and domestic violence counseling. Since then, he has faced multiple abuse allegations and controversies, including an arrest in May 2025 connected to an alleged 2023 assault.
